Opportunity Description

Title of Research Opportunity: Uncertainty-Aware AI&ML for Information Fusion Information fusion systems to meet future Army challenges will require advanced AI&ML technology that can learn and make inferences over sparse, conflicting, and heterogeneous data from possibly unreliable information sources. Currently, AI&ML systems can achieve high performance under “normal” conditions for which they were trained. However, the quality of their inferences degrade rapidly as conditions change. Furthermore, AI&ML systems have high vulnerability to adversarial attacks. It is crucial to advance AI&ML technology so that it can properly express uncertainty in its inferences and identify the “unusual” observations and corresponding reasoning path to the user to achieve more robust decision making. Recent advances in Bayesian and evidential neural networks, second-order probabilities, trust/reputation systems, and subjective logic appear to provide a pathway to achieve such uncertainty-awareness. We work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to place recent graduates in full-time and part-time jobs in the Office of Research and Development at EPA under the National Student Services Contract. ORAU also works with Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation.
