Opportunity Description

Team Assessment and Leadership Knowledge Observation Network With headquarters in Adelphi, Maryland, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is the Army's central laboratory. Its diverse assortment of unique facilities and dedicated workforce of government and private sector partners make up the largest source of world-class integrated research and analysis in the Army. Studies are needed to develop an understanding of individual and team performance assessment, decision making, and cohesion in gamified contexts and mixed reality, which combines physical aspects of the built environment with virtual reality displayed content. Typical efforts focus on comparing performance outcomes across a range of immersive training scenarios, including desktop, mixed reality, and live training scenarios; as well as elucidating the relationship between individual trait and social factors and how they affect decision-making, team dynamics, resilience, cohesion, and training outcomes. Exceptional post-doctoral candidates are sought in the intersection of the Learning Sciences, Experimental Social Psychology, and Human Factors of Simulation-Based Trainers for an immediate opening. The opportunity will entail doing research as part of a multi-disciplinary team with close integration of software developers, instructional designers, and cognitive scientists to focus on both applied and basic theoretical problems in the science of training and teams. Research activities involve the development of an experimental comparison of current military simulators with the latest commercial off-the shelf technologies, conducting studies at military installations, analyzing data, and authoring manuscripts for peer-review or government technical reports. Applicants should have received a Ph.D. degree in Experimental Psychology, Human Factors, Cognitive Science or a closely related discipline. Candidates should demonstrate a strong academic background with research experience in experimental psychology, as evidenced by recent technical presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Experience with virtual reality, multi-modal data, statistical analytical techniques, team dynamics and cohesion, as well military training research is highly desirable.
