Modeling and Simulation for Power Transfer in Hybrid Composite Material Systems A research opportunity is available with the U.S Army Research Laboratory’s (ARL) Vehicle Technology Directorate (VTD), located at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH. VTD is seeking a postdoctoral graduate with a background in Computer Science, Engineering, or Physics. Initiate and advance modeling studies of next generation material systems for aerospace power transfer with an emphasis on vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft such as rotorcraft. Develop validated predictive tools for hybrid material systems incorporating advanced composites and ceramics, of interest to replace high strength and durability steels (including, but not limited to hybrid composite gears and composite shafts [1,2]). This opportunity will include material modeling at multiple scales using a combination of commercial software packages, specialized software tools and material databases, and interfacing with onsite experimental research to improve predictive modeling of these material systems and devices. The research associate will have access to fundamental materials test and characterization facilities as well component test and other applied facilities to assist with the refinement and validation of modeling techniques. Of interest are material system responses such as internal and interfacial stress and strain, fatigue and damage mechanisms, thermal transport, and dynamic characteristics and behavior. This effort will develop improved simulation environments and advance the potential of a step change in power transfer material systems to replace conventional gears, bearings and shafts. Desired skills include: experience modeling laminar composites, anisotropic materials, and adhesive bonds, using Abaqus. Additionally, experience with gear and driveline specific codes such as Transmission 3D and Calyx is desired.
