To search and apply for other internships, experiential learning opportunities, academic fellowships and scholarships, please visit www.zintellect.com/. One ORISE research opportunity is available at the USACE - Environmental Lab. The research opportunity will be located in Vicksburg, MS. U.S. Citizenship is required. The ideal candidate will have received a MS in microbiology that has experience doing molecular biology as well as traditional microbiology within the past five years. This is a twelve month appointment, with the opportunity to be renewed for additional twelve month terms. This opportunity includes, but is not limited to, the following: The participant will assist with multiple projects focused on various aspects of microbiology which include host-chemical-microbiome interactions, microbial mediated contaminant transformations and fungal bioleaching of amorphous materials. The participant will gain experience quantifying microbial community diversity, composition and activity in microbiome samples derived from various vertebrate hosts in response to chemical exposure using molecular and traditional microbial approaches. The participant will gain experience with enriching, isolating and characterizing environmental bacteria able to transform chemical contaminants of concern. The participant will assist with evaluating the kinetics of fungal mediated bioleaching and biotransformation of amorphous silica materials. The ideal candidate will have some peer-reviewed publications, demonstration of ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment, and a working knowledge of molecular methods, culturing of microorganisms and biochemical assays with some knowledge of instrumentation such as HPLC/GC.
