Opportunity Description

Title of Research Opportunity: High Efficiency, Ultra-Reliable Turbomachinery Vehicle Technology Directorate seeks a post-doctoral researcher to conduct cutting edge high efficiency, ultra-reliable small turbomachinery research for advancing the propulsive power of air and ground vehicles for the U.S. Army. A strong academic background and proven research expertise are needed in the areas of Turbomachinery applied to Propulsion technologies. U.S. ARL seeks a candidate with a doctoral degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering with academic and research focus in Compressors or Turbines (axial-flow and/or centrifugal/radial turbomachinery) for gas turbine engines or turbochargers for piston engines. Research and/or working experience in fluid-structure computations/analysis and/or experimental measurements of flows and induced vibrations inside turbomachinery (compressors or turbines) will be essential. Experimental methods to investigate blade flutter, vibration, blade displacement studies on high speed turbomachinery will be preferred. A good background and/or research experience in turbomachinery materials and or coatings for turbomachinery blades will be a plus. The selected candidate will work with U.S. ARL scientists and engineers utilizing state-of the-art government laboratory infrastructure to conduct experimental research and innovate turbomachinery component technologies for the future Army VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft/UAV (Unmanned Air Vehicle) engines as well as ground vehicle engines. The selected candidate shall support simulated altitude experimental investigations on turbochargers for robust performance at extreme conditions including high speeds and altitudes.
