Title of Research Opportunity: Experimental Research in High-Performance Fiber Materials Located at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is the Army's central laboratory. Its diverse assortment of unique facilities and dedicated workforce of government and private sector partners make up the largest source of world-class integrated research and analysis in the Army. The Composites and Hybrid Materials Branch of the US Army Research Laboratory is looking for an applicant in the area of polymeric materials characterization to carry out mechanical and thermal testing plus analysis of performance fibers. Testing will include materials such as Aramid and UHMWPE fibers which currently exhibit strength characteristics and therefore ballistic performance at a fraction of their theoretical ceiling. The guiding research goal of this work is to increase ballistic performance of these fibers over the state of the art. ARL is currently studying fiber structure-properties relationships to understand how processing may be changed to increase ballistic performance. The selected participant will perform mechanical and thermal testing, sample preparation and atomic force microscope (AFM) mapping on a selection of commercial and experimental ballistic fibers. The participant must be a US citizen, and have a B.S. up to M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering Mechanics, Physics or similar technical area.
