Opportunity Description

Title of Research Opportunity: Applied Cognition in Augmented and Virtual Reality Systems Augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) allow users to view and interact with virtual content. The fidelity of this technology is continually improving and utilizing this technology to display novel battlespace information to Soldiers has the potential to revolutionize how the Army fights wars. However, because virtual content is rendered on a 2D surface in order to appear as if it is 3D, virtual content will always rely on users' perceptual and cognitive processes to be correctly interpreted and acted upon. The Army Research Lab's (ARL) Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED) has multiple programs of research whose goal is to understand how humans interact with intelligent systems. Research is needed to address, for example, how specific design choices influence user ability to understand and utilize complex information (e.g., uncertainty associated with intelligent system predictions) in operationally relevant contexts. Applicants will be expected to work as part of a team to design, conduct, and publish results of human subjects experimentation in support of these goals. Experience should demonstrate that the applicant possesses a relevant knowledge base of cognitive psychology (e.g., attention, decision-making), visual perception, computer science or engineering, or uncertainty quantification/communication and has a basic understanding of psychological factors that play a role in human-system interaction, team collaboration, cognitive performance, or the effects of technology on overall human-system performance.
