Opportunity Description

Title of Research Opportunity: Aeroelasticity of Turbochargers for Airborne Applications Turbochargers used in aircraft propulsion systems can experience harmful aeroelastic phenomena such as resonant vibration and flutter, especially when operated at off-design or extreme conditions. Modeling and simulation of the fluid structure interactions which give rise to these phenomena will provide key insights into the underlying physics. Potential candidates should have a strong understanding of numerical methods for simulation of fluid and structural dynamics and their interaction, and they will collaborate with other researchers to complement experimental turbocharger measurement efforts. Ultimately, this research should provide new insights into the aeroelastic stability of turbocharger components, enabling design improvements to be suggested and more accurate methods of analysis to be developed.
